Overview, working principle and application location of ESD static suppressors in circuits

What is a TVS diode (ESD">ESD static suppressor)?
This is a Zener diode primarily used to protect against electrostatic discharge (ESD">ESD), and is typically used to protect ICs from ESD">ESD from USB cables. TVS diodes have extremely low inter-electrode capacitance, so they do not affect the signal, and their resistance (Rdyn) is very low, which enhances protection. Products that support ESD">ESD in both forward and reverse directions have recently become mainstream products.

Why do you need TVS diodes (ESD">ESD static suppressors)?
Semiconductors used in electronic components have high performance and density, and manufacturing processes have been improved to reduce size. Downsizing often reduces the component's resistance to ESD. Given the many opportunities to connect devices via USB, ESD protection is becoming increasingly important.

How do TVS diodes (ESD static suppressors) work?
How current flows in a circuit when electronic components are operating normally (blue wire) and when exposed to static electricity (red wire). When the electronic component is operating normally, the TVS diode remains off and exhibits parasitic (junction) capacitance, thus acting as a capacitor. When a voltage greater than a certain voltage is applied to a TVS diode, current suddenly starts flowing through the TVS diode. Therefore, when the voltage generated by ESD enters the circuit, current flows through the TVS diode, keeping the voltage constant, thereby protecting the subsequent IC and other components from overvoltage and overcurrent.

Where are ESD suppressors used in the circuit?
When a charged human body comes into contact with electronic components, static electricity is released onto the electronic components. The most common electrostatic discharge (ESD) entry points include USB, HDMI, power, and other connector ports. ESD can also enter from exposed antennas on metal surfaces.
TVS diodes must be connected to all data and power lines that require ESD protection. TVS diodes should be placed as close as possible to the ESD entry point.
We offer an extensive product line of TVS diodes, including single TVS diodes and multi-channel TVS diode arrays. Our product line also includes TVS diode arrays with flow-through pinouts designed for the popular USB, HDMI and other multi-ports to simplify board layout. Please select TVS diodes based on signal frequency, circuit configuration and circuit board layout.
