Overview
TSS(Thyristor Surge suppressor) is an electronic component that uses semiconductor elements (such as diodes, thyristors, field effect transistors, etc.) for voltage protection. It is widely used to protect electronic equipment from damage caused by voltage surges (such as lightning strikes, power switch operations, etc.). Compared with traditional protection components such as gas discharge tubes (GDTs) and varistors (MOVs), semiconductor surge protectors have higher response speeds, longer service lives, and more precise voltage protection characteristics.
Working Principle
The TSS is mainly based on the current control characteristics of semiconductor materials. When the voltage in the circuit exceeds a certain threshold, the semiconductor material of the semiconductor discharge tube will quickly conduct, thereby guiding the excessive voltage or current to flow to the grounding system to protect the equipment from damage. Semiconductor discharge tubes have extremely fast response times and can detect voltage surges and provide protection in a very short time (usually nanoseconds).
Features
- Fast response: TSSs respond very quickly, usually in nanoseconds. When the voltage exceeds the set threshold, it can turn on immediately to avoid damage to the equipment.
- Accurate voltage protection: TSSs can accurately turn on when the voltage exceeds a specific threshold, and have good voltage stability and protection capabilities. Compared with traditional varistors (MOVs), their voltage protection is more accurate.
- High withstand voltage capability: Many TSSs have high withstand voltage capabilities and can withstand large voltage surges (hundreds to thousands of volts), which are suitable for various industrial and household appliances.
- Long life and reliability: Compared with traditional gas discharge tubes (GDTs), TSSs have no gas leakage problems, so they have longer life, more stable performance, and adapt to more stringent working environments.
- Small size and light weight: TSSs are usually smaller and lighter than gas discharge tubes and varistors, and are more suitable for integration into small electronic devices, especially modern microelectronic systems.
- No gas pollution problem: Unlike gas discharge tubes that require the use of gas, TSSs have no risk of gas leakage, aging and contamination, low maintenance costs and high reliability.
