Overview
The main function of the rectifier diode is to convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). This is achieved by allowing current to flow in only one direction. Specifically, the rectifier diode conducts during the positive half-cycle of the AC and cuts off during the negative half-cycle, thereby "rectifying" the waveform of the AC into pulsating DC.
Rectifier diodes are commonly used in the following applications
- Power rectification: In power supply, the AC power obtained from the power grid is converted into the DC power required by the equipment.
- Current protection: Prevent damage from reverse current, often used for reverse protection in circuits.
- Signal rectification: Used in some signal processing circuits to rectify AC signals into pulsating DC signals.
- Battery charging: Convert AC power into DC power and provide it to rechargeable batteries.
Rectifier diodes are generally divided into two types according to their working mode:
- Unidirectional rectification: allows current to flow in only one direction.
- Bridge rectification: uses four diodes to form a bridge circuit to improve rectification efficiency.
